About Texas electricity deregulation

What is deregulation?

In 2002, Texas opened its electricity market to competition. Residents in deregulated areas can choose from dozens of retail electricity providers, each offering different plans, rates, and contract terms.

What is a TDU?

A Transmission and Distribution Utility (TDU) owns and maintains the power lines and infrastructure that deliver electricity to your home. In deregulated areas, five TDUs operate: Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Texas North, AEP Texas Central, and Texas-New Mexico Power (TNMP). Your TDU is determined by your physical address, not your electricity provider.

Why can't some areas choose?

Municipal utilities (like Austin Energy and Lubbock Power & Light) and electric cooperatives opted out of deregulation. If you live in one of these service areas, your utility is your only option for electricity.

What is an ESIID?

An Electric Service Identifier (ESIID) is a unique number assigned to every meter point in Texas. It tells providers exactly which meter to serve. When you check your address above, we look up your ESIID to determine your TDU territory and whether you can shop for electricity.
